Two of New York’s finest strolled into the now near-empty restaurant—one fresh faced, the other older with a street-hardened mug, pug-nosed and leather-skinned.

Before the officers made their way over, Gary whispered to Eric, “Can’t talk to them here. Go outside.” He slapped Eric on the back, sending a stab through his aching head, then pressed the cellphone back into his hand. “Don’t forget this.”

Eric pushed slowly to his feet, and headed toward the officers. He met them near the entrance, away from the nosy stragglers who’d hung around, no doubt hoping for Round Two. Before either officer said a word, Eric asked, “Can we talk outside? Boss’s orders.”

The older of the two nodded. “All right. Go with Officer Tonello while I take a look inside, okay?”

Eric exhaled, then followed Tonello to the patrol car. The officer opened the back door. “Have a seat. You look a little…” He let his words trail off as Eric gingerly climbed inside.

Officer Tonello was slight of build and smaller than Eric thought a cop should be. But the pistol hanging by his side, along with the pepper spray, taser, and baton were great equalizers.

“Sir, may I see some ID, please?”

Eric removed his wallet from his back pocket and pulled out his ID. As he peered down at it, he saw the face of a good-looking, arrogant asshole staring back at him.

Tonello examined it, then gave it back. “Thank you, Mr. Cargill. Please tell me exactly what happened.”

Eric told him about being sucker punched while bussing a table and added, “Simple as that. Unprovoked assault.”

“So, you don’t know the assailant?” Tonello asked.

The word ‘no’ lingered on the tip of Eric’s tongue but he thought it through. It might be better to tell the truth. “I don’t really know him. But I know his name. It’s Costas.”

“Surname and description, please?”

“I don’t know his last name. But he’s tall, at least six three and muscular. Black hair. I didn’t notice his eye color. He was wearing an unzipped leather jacket and a polo shirt,” Eric continued. “I think maybe he hit me because I’m friends with his fiancée.”

Tonello nodded as he took notes, glancing up every so often, expressionless.

Eric left out how Costas beat Lilah, but part of him wanted to explain that as well. He had to be careful, it might be too risky to let that info out. Costas could come back harder, making Lilah pay the price. Despite the chill in the air, sweat prickled his skin and regret brought bile to his throat. He should have kept his lips zipped.

“Do you know where he lives?” Officer Tonello asked.

He thought of Lilah’s address in his contacts list. Costas could easily be on his way there right now. “I have no idea.”

“What about the fiancée? Can you give me her name and contact info?”

It felt as if his eyes were going to pop out of his head. He should have picked his words more carefully. Of course the officer would want Lilah’s details. It would be the easiest way to find Costas.
